Local Food Distribution
Strengthening Our Food System
By Connecting Local Farms to Those Who Need Fresh Food Most
A Single Bite's Local Food Distribution program creates a vital bridge between our agricultural community and the people who need fresh, nutritious food most.
Through our Farm-to-School initiatives, food pantry partnerships, and storage facilities, we're building a stronger, more sustainable local food system that benefits everyone—from our farmers to our schoolchildren to our neighbors facing food insecurity.
These initiatives were begun in 2024 after we assumed operations of the Catskills Food Hub, allowing us to expand and deepen our reach into the community through our mission.
Three Ways We Strengthen Our Food System
In Our Schools: Farm-to-School Program
With the hopes of reinforcing our messaging on healthy food choices for our children, we are making healthy, local food choices available in Sullivan County school cafeterias.
A Single Bite's Farm-to-School program helps school food service directors incorporate locally grown foods into their breakfast and lunch cafeteria menus. We identify sources, verify farm credentials, aggregate products, and deliver them directly to schools in the form they want.
Our mission is two-fold: increase the nutritional value of school meals and make the incorporation of local produce easy for food service directors and their staff with our processing and preservation capacities.
We believe that healthy eating habits can be encouraged by just A Single Bite. Our Farm-to-School offerings reinforce the lessons of our education program, elevating the school cafeteria experience with high quality, local foods that taste better, are more nutritious, and support local, sustainable farming practices.
For Our Community: Food Pantry Partnerships
All too often the food pantries that support our neighbors in need don't have the option to offer their recipients fresh and preserved local products.
A Single Bite, in partnership with the Sullivan Catskills Food Security Coalition, is working to reduce food waste while getting fresh, quality products to Sullivan County's network of food pantries.
At least twice monthly, we distribute fresh, donated surplus fruits and vegetables from Sullivan and Orange County producers that would have otherwise been discarded. This partnership ensures that nutritious, local food reaches families who need it most while supporting our region's farmers by reducing waste.
For Our Farmers and Purveyors: Storage and Distribution Hub
Our A Single Bite facility offers pallet storage for both refrigerated and frozen food items.
Equipped with a raised loading dock, a ground-level bay, multiple pallet relocation methods, and after-hours access options, farmers can take advantage of secure, affordable, and centrally located storage and distribution possibilities just minutes off NY-17 in the heart of Sullivan County.
This infrastructure supports our local agricultural economy by providing farmers with the resources they need to get their products to market efficiently and cost-effectively.
